We stayed at the Sunningdale while visiting Bamburgh for the Bohemian Rhapsody cinema night in the grounds of the castle. Stunning venue and great night even with the rain! Our... read more room was room 8 overlooking the front and it was really nice. The bed was very comfortable and the furnishing and decor with soft grey and cream tones made the room bright and airy. Even though we overlooked the front street there was no problem with traffic noise. Breakfast was very enjoyable. There is a good continental section and our cooked breakfast was lovely. Even though the dining room was busy the service was swift and efficient. All of the staff were friendly including the owner who checked us in and the staff who served our breakfast. The hotel is dog friendly and although we don't own our own dog it didn't bother us at all. It was our first visit but will definitely return.
My wife and I stayed at the Sunningdale for one night as part of a mini break around the North East. We stayed in a room on the top... read more floor, which had Southerly views of the castle and coast line. The room was quite small but not cramped, it was really well furnished, spotlessly clean, warm and quiet. There was a nice selection of complimentary tea, coffee, biscuits and water and a lovely big TV. The shower controls were a little tricky but once you've worked them out it's a good shower. Breakfast was very pleasant as well, in the comfortable lounge. I thought the cost of the room was a little expensive but then again there were no other comparable rooms available in the town that night..... We would definitely go back if we were staying in the area.
Location was so near to the castle, room had just been redecorated and recarpeted, and the colour scheme was lovely. The bathroom was fairly large and eveything so clean... read more and fresh.
The staff were lovely, could not fault anything and was very reasonably priced for the superb quality of breakfast which was also included.
Felt very safe in this current climate. Would not hesitate to stay here again if we came back to Bamburgh, we were very lucky to find this hotel.
We had booked three nights at the Sunningdale last January as our base for a tour of northern part of Northumberland. It was only two weeks before departure that... read more we had the good news that the hotel had reopened.
No issues with sanitizing, cleaning , social distance etc and felt as relaxed as we could possibly be.
The first thing to impress us was the friendliness of all staff who come across as a happy team. The room was in excellent condition and was very quiet despite being next to narrow road.
Two sitting for breakfast so that residents could be kept safe. A good selection available and arrives freshly cooked. At present restaurant only open over weekends which is a shame as we were only able to dine on the Friday evening. The food was superb and superior to some of the local restaurants in the area. Must also applaud the hotel for being realistic with the quality of wine served and price- the previous evening we had an inferior wine at another restaurant and were charged far more.
Parking is available at the side of the hotel, although tight access.
Can highly recommend this friendly hotel if you want to shake off the lock down blues in stunning Northumberland. So much to see and do but make sure you take a trip with Serenity boats to the Farne Islands and see wildlife close up.
We had the best weekend during our stay here. The rooms were decorated lovely & the staff were so welcoming & attentive, they made sure we felt welcome, especially our... read more puppy Zeus, who was on his first stay away from home. He even got his own sausage for breakfast! The food was brilliant & the decor in the bar/restaurant was very stylish, we enjoyed a drink on the terrace outside each afternoon and sat and watched the world go by. Everything was perfect and we can’t wait to return.
Visiting family in the area for a few days,I enjoyed a relaxing stay at The Sunningdale.Ihad a well appointed single room at a good price and felt very comfortable.The... read more cooked breakfast looked very good but I prefer something lighter and enjoyed toast and fresh pastries.Only downside - the coffee wasn't great.Perfect location for exploring beautiful Bamburgh.
Breakfast and evening meal was excellent. Much better than the pubs in the village and was on the eat out government discount scheme. Needed a bigger table at breakfast because... read more there was so much food brought out. Staff were friendly too, if a little deceiving at times (one minute there was “no brown sauce left at all” and the next minute, voila!, brown sauce for a different table) plus the “wifi must have gone off” when the penultimate couple had left the bar at 9:30pm, so sitting there without the Sonos playing music meant for an early night for us (and the barmaid). Hmmm? We were perplexed as to why the receptionist told us at check-in, that she would of liked to upgrade us as we were staying for 4 nights but couldn’t due to the hotel being full. Not a problem we thought and then we saw our double room. We have stayed in larger cabins on the cheap cruises. I could very nearly touch both walls with my hands and toes. Guessing this was a frequent criticism, hence her comment? Bed was comfy but pillows were terribly flat, so didn’t sleep well. We booked the double room, so it was our fault for not noticing, but I’ve never stayed in a room that small before. The other big negative was the parking. It was awkward to park and occasionally you were hemmed in by the staff, so we... Breakfast and evening meal was excellent. The other big negative was the parking. It was awkward to park and occasionally you were hemmed in by the staff, so we parked on the road for free.
Oh and shower lost pressure at times. Not enough to be an issue but was irritating.
Rooms aren’t being serviced whilst Covid is around, but they will leave tea/coffee/milk sachets and change towels if you ask.
Bamburgh is a lovely place and the hotel is well located so if you are happy with a “cosy” room and vulnerable parking then by all means give this place a go.
It just lacked the features that were important to us, so we would stay elsewhere next time. More
We have just spent two days at this overpriced establishment. The room in the attic was tiny with a shower that a 10 year old would struggle to wash in.... read more Hearing the guests snore in the adjoining rooms was not conducive to good sleep. Staff were hard to find. We waited and rang the bell for bar service on Tuesday, but no one responded. We went to The Victoria for a nice drink instead. I wish we had booked there instead.
If you are visiting Bamburgh, stay in a lodge in Newcastle and hire a helicopter. It may be more economical.
When leaving I was asked if I enjoyed the stay. I replied that I wished she hadn’t asked that question. The response was that she said nothing and processed the payment
My final concern was the unrestricted window which opened to full capacity. Health and safety lacking here. More
A return after a while away due to restrictions. Good to be back, lovely family run hotel, friendly staff and a great breakfast. Very dog friendly even had a welcome... read more pack. Perfectly placed in Bamburgh and very handy for each and castle.

The staff, drinks and food was also fantastic. Lots of attention to detail that made our stay even more special. A Special thank you for the very warm welcome and hospitality, to the lovely lady who checked us in on 31st July. I didn’t catch her name (I normally look out for a name badge!) but she did say she’d worked there 16 years, so hopefully you’ll know who she is! We will definitely be staying here again More

We were told we could not, it was Sunday and they had experienced a very busy weekend, we could return to our car and sit there for 3 hours, we were really taken aback, we are both senior citizens recovering from a serious illness and just wanted to sit somewhere warm, if we had not been meeting friends we would have looked for somewhere else to stay. The room we had was a family room, fairly comfortable, although the beds had seen better days, we were advised rooms were not serviced unless it was requested, but if we we needed anything to just ask. Our friends had been allocated a small twin room with poor storage and very little space.
Room temperature was a problem, it was either very hot or very cold particularly in the afternoons, no heated towel rails.
Meals in the hotel restaurant were very well cooked and well presented, if anything portions were over generous and although I requested small portions I received large portions. Service was prompt, friendly and courteous.
On the whole facilities in the hotel were OK, having to ask for rooms to be serviced combined with the heating issues were alien to our notion of good client care, The staff were exemplary and the food good, our initial meeting with perhaps the owner?, the manager?, we were not introduced, was way below our expectations and experience, so for our stay we believe a description of poor to average to be fair and appropriate.
